Welcome Career The "Genyadana" Yatate and Sketch Column Web Gallery

A welcome message from Art Concierge SORA, the designer and manager of this website.

Since entering the tutelage of the master painter of Japanese bijinga (paintings of beautiful women), Shinsui Ito, in 1950, Goyoh Ohtake has been immersed in the artist’s life for more than half a century.

An introduction of the method of Japanese painting that Goyoh Ohtake uses to produce his works of art, accompanied by a “genealogy” of the Genyadana school, which boasts a long tradition stretching from Toyohiro Utagawa, the ancestor of the Utagawa and Hiroshige ukiyo-e schools, through the influential ukiyo-e masters Kuniyoshi Utagawa, Yoshitoshi Tsukioka, and Toshikata Mizuno, down to the modern bijinga masters, Kiyotaka Kaburagi and Shinsui Ito… and last but not least, Goyoh Ohtake.

This introduces the appeal and importance of yatate (portable brush and ink) and sketch as taught by Shinsui It?. Enjoy viewing some works created using the yatate.

Goyoh Ohtake shares his thoughts about his master, Shinsui Ito and about his continuing work as a unique bijinga artist in the ukiyo-e style. Updated quarterly starting from March 2006.

Some of the many paintings produced by Japanese artist Goyoh Ohtake over his 50-year career are introduced here. Works on display will be updated once a month, starting from January 2006.
