(Shizuka’s Dance)

1975
Size P100
(162.1cm x 112.1cm)

At the Kamakura Festival at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine every April, a Japanese traditional dancer performs a votive dance known as “Shizuka’s Dance” on a stage in the shrine precincts. This work is based on the legend that Shizuka Gozen, lover of the hero Yoshitsune Minamoto, danced to express her grief to the Shogun Yorimoto who had driven her lover to his death. As I painted this, I tried to capture her feelings.
