Three Themes of a Maiko’s Dream
Snow, Moon and Flowers

(Spring Snow)

1988
Size M50 (116.7cm x 72.7cm)

I travel to Kyoto every year in order to sketch the maiko. The maiko who modeled for the Snow, Moon and Flowers series is called Momino and had appeared in my works some years before. During one sketching session, as she was taking a break she nodded off, and I thought this was interesting to sketch. I was charmed by the gentle form of this maiko, with her body totally relaxed in a way that it is not when she is posing for a sketch, and so I sketched her like this. As I was sketching, the idea for the three dreams “Snow, Moon and Flowers” came to me — the world of a sleeping maiko. I recall enjoying creating this image of a maiko’s dream with three Japanese ideals of beauty: snow, moon and flowers.
