There are a lot of wild camellias in Kamakura; these are my favorite type of camellia flower. I like to think of camellias as a heroic flower; they fall to the ground while they are still beautiful. I come across them as I am out walking, and, without thinking, collect them and bring them back to my studio to sketch. As I sketch I recall with regret how short the life of a flower is. I painted this expression of regret on the maiko.
